Changes in Branch 146 Luncheons

Who we are and what we do...

As they say in New Orleans,"Laissez les bons temps Rouler". Let the good times roll. Fun and building friendships is what we're all about.

We are Branch 146 of SIR Inc., part of a larger nonprofit organization with branches in many communities in Central and Northern California. The purpose of SIR is to provide social, physical and mental engagement for men. The number of members in Branch 146 is about 250 which is large enough to provide opportunities for members to renew old friendships and to develop new friends by participating in any number of activities that might be of interest to them. Our members come from all over the East Bay. Branch 146 holds its luncheons in the Boundary Oak Golf Course Clubhouse in Walnut Creek on the 2nd Thursday of the month.

Research has shown that older adults with an active lifestyle: Are less likely to develop certain diseases. Participating in hobbies and other social activities may lower risk for developing some health problems, including dementia, heart disease, stroke, and some types of cancer.

Branch 146 members are a congenial group of guys. A lot of friendships have been formed over the years since the branch's inception in 1988. Energy and a willingness to contribute to the good of the branch are personal qualities that have been dominant factors in our organization.

Golfing is our largest outdoor activity, involving many members. Our 18-hole group plays at Boundary Oak Golf Course every Tuesday. In addition, there are occasional "away golf" outings throughout the year, some of which include golfers from other branches. There is also a 9-hole group that plays at Diablo Hills on Thursdays. Mexican Train dominoes is another major activity, with ten groups meeting monthly. Bocce ball, cycling, duplicate bridge, party bridge, cribbage, and hiking, are also part of the branch's activities scheduled at least once per month. Many other social groups round out the weekly and monthly social calendars, including cooking groups, fishing, investment, several poker groups, SongSirs, theater, and veterans. Importantly, members' spouses and significant others participate in about half of our activities including dining out, couples' bridge, ladies' day luncheons, Mexican Train dominoes, wine tasting events, and travel both domestically and internationally.

The SIR organization and especially SIR Branch 146 is, at least in the hearts and minds of its members, second to none! Here is a short video about our organization.
